Thinking Matter
An approach to ceramic materials from the perspective of contemporary art
Abstract
Ceramic materials used to be linked to artisanal trades. This craft was once acquired at the masters’ workshops. Now, it is taught at courses aimed at several career paths associated with design, industry and technology. The same is true of visual arts studies, which also require specialized training. But specialization does not favor interdisciplinarity. Thus, ceramists understand the aesthetic and the decorative as equal, whereas artists avoid virtuosity as they are only concerned with the work process. We will refer to the latter here.
